What each calculatoractually tells you.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

What it shows
Your weight relative to your height: the most common first check of an adult's weight.
How it's calculated
Weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. WHO categories: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, 30 and above obesity.
Keep in mind
BMI can't tell muscle from fat. It gives a poor picture for athletes, during pregnancy, and for children and teenagers, who are measured against growth charts instead.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

What it shows
The energy your body uses at complete rest, just for vital functions such as breathing and circulation.
How it's calculated
The Mifflin–St Jeor equation: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age, plus 5 for men or minus 161 for women.
Keep in mind
It's an estimate. Body composition (how much muscle you carry), illness and some medicines can push your real metabolism higher or lower.

Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

What it shows
All the calories you burn in a day, including daily activity and exercise.
How it's calculated
BMR multiplied by an activity factor: 1.2 sedentary, 1.375 lightly active, 1.55 moderately active, 1.725 very active and 1.9 extremely active.
Keep in mind
How accurate this is depends above all on choosing the right activity level.

Maintenance Calories

What it shows
The daily calories at which your current weight stays roughly the same.
How it's calculated
Equal to your TDEE: eat this much, and the energy you take in roughly matches what you burn.
Keep in mind
Day-to-day weight swings with water and food in the body, so judge whether it's stable by the average over a few weeks.

Weight Loss Calories

What it shows
A suggested daily calorie target for losing weight gradually, at the pace you choose.
How it's calculated
Your TDEE minus 250, 500 or 1,000 kcal, for roughly 0.25, 0.5 or 1 kg a week, assuming a kilogram of body fat holds about 7,700 kcal.
Keep in mind
Real weight loss is rarely a straight line, and a lighter body burns fewer calories. Large deficits are best done under a dietitian's supervision.

Weight Gain Calories

What it shows
A suggested daily calorie target for gaining weight gradually.
How it's calculated
Your TDEE plus 250, 500 or 1,000 kcal, for roughly 0.25, 0.5 or 1 kg a week.
Keep in mind
Whether the weight you gain is muscle or fat depends on what you eat and how you train, not just on calories.
